Lady Laureate
1
Memories
planted, like
flowers in her garden
she tends to them
with hands
still soft as I remember
2
stroking my hair,
wiping away tears,
I wonder if she knows
That was me,
The girl who followed close, like a shadow,
Braided her hair;
That was me,
Always hungry for hamburgers
and answers.
The one who
picked pecans and chased fireflies;
that was me
the dreamer
3
now she calls my daughter
by my name,
recollects memories of my childhood like
she and I are one
smiling softly, yesterdays memories
like diamonds in her eyes
stroking my daughters head
with hands still soft as I
remember
