Poetry Writing Workshop for Women
July 10, 17, 24, 31
Four
(1.5 hour) workshops will be held 4 consecutive Sundays: July 10 at 5pm,
July 17 at 3pm, July 24 at 5pm, July 31 at 5pm in
the Coffee Underground Theatre. Total Cost $20. Limit 10 women. Registration

In each session, we will look at example poems. Also we’ll have lots of prompt questions and pre-writing exercises to help spring board us into writing our poems. Groundwork is what you should bring with you to the workshop that day. Beginners are welcome!
July 10 at 5pm. Workshop I. Wild Personae Poem
Introductions and Warm-up Writing.
Craft Lesson: Point of View/Personae, Plot, Fresh Language, Touchstone Images
In-Workshop writing exercise: Wild Personae Poem.
July 17 at 3pm. Workshop II – Dramatic Personae Poems
Groundwork: Bring research on Woman of Note (can be historic or current). HINT: Use the internet; this will only take about 10 minutes.
In-Workshop writing exercise: Pick a dramatic moment in Woman’s life and write a poem from her perspective, set in that dramatic moment.
Craft Lesson: Form, Line Breaks, Titles, Excess Language.
July 24 at 5pm. Workshop III – Letter Personae Poem or Recipe Poem
Groundwork: Think of a subject for a letter poem. Can be between historical, mythological, fairy tale, biblical, movie stars, fictional, current events characters (Dear Prince, Love Cinderella – Dear Adam, Love Eve – Dear Sun, Love Moon – Dear Gargamel, Love Smurfette).

Craft Lesson: Sound, Rhythm, Editing
July 31 at 5pm. Workshop IV – Workshop Day
Groundwork: Bring (10) copies of 1 of the 3 poems we have started.
Feedback Session: We will share and give feedback to each others poems.
Craft Lesson: Top tips on submitting poems for publication.
July 31 at 7pm.
Poetic Perspectives Reading at Coffee Underground
All workshop participants are invited to share their poems (new or old or by other people) at the Coffee Underground. Evening will also include a reading by Kimberly Simms from her new chapbook “The Dancing Tree.”
